The contribution of the hegemonic class to the destruction of peasant culture has been significant and has manifested itself through the mobilisation of all the cultural apparatuses suited to ideologically supporting the one-way development of the nation. Peasant culture, as the history of a subaltern class, must be recovered through rigorous studies and well-defined conceptual frameworks, also in view of the contribution it can make to a more precise identification of the stages of the workers’ and peasants’ movement in the class struggle. The history of social formations, political parties, trade unions, cooperatives etc. helps to reconstruct the life of these populations still tied to the rural world, also in order to better interpret the process of transformation under way
