The richly illustrated volume takes its cue from the two exhibitions mounted in October at the Biblioteca Nazionale (from November 2014) and at the Archivio di Stato di Napoli (from January 2015), reproducing many of the documents found and displayed on the occasion of the two exhibitions, but it goes much further. Indeed, the contributions offered by numerous specialists make it possible to reconstruct the various phases of the history of Italy and of the Mezzogiorno and to examine in depth the aspects of the life of the Naples Community which, although small, remains active and vital in all its fundamental religious and cultural aspects. A journey that begins with the first archaeological discoveries on the Jewish presence in Naples, passes through the sixteenth-century expulsion of the Jews from the Viceroyalty, and reaches the modern age, with the period of greatest splendour of the Rothschild family, up to the establishment of a true community in 1864, a history unbroken to the present day
